The info you provide is very terse.
“SF6” is probably http://www.sanfranroaster.com/sf-6lb <http://www.sanfranroaster.com/sf-6lb>
And “Watlow" I assume to mean http://www.watlow.com/products/controllers/temperature.cfm <http://www.watlow.com/products/controllers/temperature.cfm>
My hunch is you maybe just connected the cables without making sure that variables like baud speed, even/uneven, parity, stopbits are all set exactly the same on both ends.
SF should be providing that info / assistance in their manuals / service desk.

To Franz or anyone:
Two things, Is it possible to have the software automatically display the
DE when the temp reaches 300F. Right now I click this and it shows up on
the graph. How do I do this automatically each time?
Second a request for future editions of Artisan:
I am tracking four temperature probes, and Air flow, and Gas Pressure. Is
it possible on the gas flow to show the actual number of gas pressure on the
graph along with the graph? This may be too complicated? So that if the
gas pressure is held constant at 40% or 43% for 30 seconds or more, that
number is displayed on the graph. I am having a bit of difficulty in
reading over to the axis and seeing accurately what the gas pressure was at
that point in the roast.
Thank You
David
The Thermocouple -> Amprobe -> USB -> computer -> Artisan connection allows you to log the roast and you can use the manual controls to manage the roast according to your intended profile.
I first used that on a tiny electrical roaster, then switched to the Fuji and specified all steps on my blog, but that is not of help if you want to have the Fuji PID control the gas heater.
http://kostverlorenvaart.blogspot.nl/2014/01/fuji-pxg4-setup-for-coffee-roa… <http://kostverlorenvaart.blogspot.nl/2014/01/fuji-pxg4-setup-for-coffee-roa…>
Later, the automatic background roasting was added.
Wa’il in Ryadh did use a Fuji to control his gas powered roaster but I do not think the details of it were posted in a step by step way yet.
Jan van der Weel in Amsterdam is working on an automatic control of the gas heater in his San Franciscan roaster but as yet he is not ready to share a complete effective setup.
So maybe the logging option is a good and practical start right now.
Wishing you the best!!

Hi, I'm new here, and appreciate any advice I can get. I am currently roasting on a 6 kilo Primo Roaster, and may be getting a 24 kilo Diedrich. The Primo has a RobertShaw gas controller and gas valve, and my temp control has burnt out, so I'm totally manual with a type J thermocouple and digital reader.
Does anyone have any experience with what hardware may be useful for connecting to a computer for using Artisan with this?
Thanks,
Mike

Marko!
You are a gentleman, scholar and my hero.
I am one of those people who always do the thing that software developers
never expect anyone to actually do!
My wife is a developer, and she always marvels at how I can break her work
in just a few minutes by doing something she thought no-one would ever
'logically' do :-):-):-):-)

In the first screenshot you may see that I set Energy to 8 mbar when BT reaches 140?C and it was displayed well at that time (without having an ET graph, now in the second screenshot you may see that I set Energy to 10 mbar when BT reaches 140?C, but the ?flag? appears on the wrong (=ET) grap, although in roasting/properties/events the value is registered properly ( screenshot #3).

Indeed Frans, this is the point and topic of the discussion.
The first poster described a scenario when an event button was accidentally
clicked, which you responded to and explained a right-click on the graph to
re-position that mistaken click.
I described a further scenario where I have experienced unnecessary hassles
after -mistakenly- clicking on an event prematurely.
So, what I am describing is not an actual scenario where the beans are
cooling, as you have assumed it to be, but a mistake where the virtual
scenario is created.
In more detail for clear understanding:
1) the roast is in process
2) I mistakenly click 'Drop'
3) I right click the graph to place my 1st crack point when the true event
actually happens ( because button is not available after 'Drop' has been
mistakenly clicked.
4) I must continuously right-click to re-position DROP to monitor the %
development while the beans continue to roast (note that the beans are not
actually physically dropped yet)
5) When the beans are actually dropped, I right-click a final time to mark
the actual event of the beans physically dropping into the cooler.
This seems like an unnecessary effort that could be prevented with an
'undo" function.

Chris Pefanis

Indeed I have no way of understanding why you would DROP the beans and still continue the roast. The beans are in the cooling tray then. Or, if they are still in the drum, DROP has been clicked a little prematurely.
Never mind.

Hi Frans!
You have not understood my problem.
You should try this and see what happens to gain a clearer understanding of
the issue at hand - click DROP before you click 1st CRACK, then
right-click and add your first crack point.
If you can still see % development after DROP has been triggered but your
roast must continue, then your version of Artisan does not work the same as
mine.
My version no longer increments % development after DROP has been triggered.

Chris Pefanis
