The info you provide is very terse.
“SF6” is probably http://www.sanfranroaster.com/sf-6lb <http://www.sanfranroaster.com/sf-6lb>
And “Watlow" I assume to mean http://www.watlow.com/products/controllers/temperature.cfm <http://www.watlow.com/products/controllers/temperature.cfm>
My hunch is you maybe just connected the cables without making sure that variables like baud speed, even/uneven, parity, stopbits are all set exactly the same on both ends.
SF should be providing that info / assistance in their manuals / service desk.

I was able to get my phidget 1048 board to work on another laptop. So then I
compared registry settings looking for a needle in a haystack. Looking some
more online I saw factory reset and this cleared up my issue. I think
either connecting the thermocouple wrong or checking the asynch made some
change in the registry (or somewhere) that was not reversible and caused the
BT and ET to always read -1 leading to the error message. Hope this helps
in some way but glad it's fixed now. Factory reset will be remembered, lol.
Now that I'm connected right the offset don't look very bad either.

Dear Susan and all,
thanks for your support thought this year. You are not totally innocent that
this list got a lot more productive recently. I promise to document more
details and hints on the Artisan blog and add a proper index to this as well
in the near future.
I wish you and all Artisan users a relaxed Christmas time and peaceful 2017,

In trying to set up Artisan 0.9.0 (1376) with the Phidgets 1048 board I
encountered some issues. I finally found I had the thermocouple leads
reversed....dumb. I corrected that. Then in playing with the config I
checked Asynch, from then on the ET and BT displayed values were always -1
and it generated the following message:
Eval_math_experssion ()unexpected EOF while parsing (<string>, lin 0) @ line
2059.
Unchecking asynch doesn't fix this. I even did a uninstall and reinstalled
artisan with the same result. Tried using another USB port too.....also did
many reboots.
The Phidgets program works and reads the thermocouples just fine. I'm not
sure what to do right now and can't really do any roasting until I solve
this.
This is on a laptop running XP.
Thanks,
Fred

I recently converted from using one of the Omega Dual probe data loggers to
the Phidget 1048. I have a new dual probe J type BP sensor, ungrounded.
One probe goes to the Phidget board and the other goes to the PID SD single
set point controller for the Ambex YM-2. A 2nd j type probe is being used
for the exhaust temperature. I was using a similar configuration for the
Omega data logger before.
My problem is that the exhaust probe and BT probes that are both going to
the Phidget read about 70 deg F today. The BT probe going to the roaster
controller is reading 59 F degrees. It is only about 59 F today, chilly.
This is inside a shed protected from the weather. The Phidget board is out
in the free air in the Phidget housing mounted on a wood platform raised up
a bit using the included hardware. I have not fired up the roaster so there
are no sources of heat around the Phidget board.
I'm not sure why the Phidget board is reading 11 deg F warmer I checked with
my Omega logger and one of the old probes and it confirms that 59 F is the
correct temperature.
Do I need to offset this to get the Phidget to work correctly or is there a
problem with the sensor on the Phidget board? I saw somewhere about adding
x -11 someplace to offset but I would like to understand the issue first.
No offset was ever needed with the Omega logger.
Thanks

This User List has been such an excellent resource for me.
I want to thank everyone who has given and taken and given back.
Seems to me there has been an uptick in the sharing from users of late
for which I am grateful.
Thank You
Hi,
I'm probably a little late but I have been using
Artisan (now version 1.0.3b) on Windows 10 64bit with no problems
communicating
with a tc4 shield on an Arduino Uno (original).
If you can get an Arduino (clone) it would be a fast way of testing
your ftdi cable.
Good luck!

Okay, good, it’s fantastic how the Artisan community is helping out and coming up with suggestions.
I’m confident the machine will eventually be enabled to communicate fine!

I have sent him a new data logger USB device and asked him to send pictures of his in case a wire is loose but he has not sent any pictures. So we are sort of questing when a client tells us a problem but will not send us pictures and video clips. He said Artisan worked fine when he used it with a Proaster roaster. I am still unsure if he has downloaded and connected to the right driver.

It just came to my mind, that another issue for the actual issue of this "friend" could be a reconfigured Omron PID where either the communication parameters and/or the unit id were modified.

If the vendor ID is anything but 0x0000 then chances are that the cable itself is still OK but it doesn't rule out compatibility issues on that specific computer issues due to a fake chip as FTDI has released more than one malicious driver (the worst one actually sets vendor ID to 0x0000 though, which often breaks the device in question unless you rewrite it).

Thanks Sean for this additional information.
I can report that FTDI driver problems also hit Artisan users on Mac OS X. The fact is that each FTDI driver chip has contains some IDs that are checked again lists in the FTDI driver. If no match is detected, the connected device is just not recognised. This happens with fake FTDI devices (often build in China) that did not pay the corresponding registration fee to retrieve an FTDI device ID.

Thanks!
Those screen snapshots look good, I can’t see anything immediately wrong.
"USB Serial Port COM6" is selected if I see it correctly. Are there other ports available? Are we sure this is the port where the PID is connected to? How do we know this?
So far it looks like the machine / PID is not functioning correctly, or would need to be checked.
You say USB cords have been swapped, but are you talking about RS232-to-USB converter like I mentioned in that blog?

Can the Omron PID itself be swapped like the cables? If you have one that works well.
Is it the BC-5 roaster of $ 6,000 on this page?

Was it communicating with Artisan before Harper sold it to Wolsten?
